The Sea Between Us

Updated: Mar 25, 2020

Birdsong in the afternoon

pervading the courtyard,

chirps and echoes

Soft shadows rippling the balcony walls

cast by light-soaked curtains

pinned at the corners,

their bellies filling with wind

then exhaling again,

cotton lungs of a great sailboat,

headed nowhere

I sit at the center

of the boat,

of the being I exist in,

and in the periphery

other travelers, seafarers

sip their coffee, hang their laundry

hold tight to troubles they can't leave out to dry

They are islands I don't dare sail to

though their troubles are mine
